Chapter Seventeen
Madison was a mess; he couldn’t think and he could barely walk. After all his years of serving his Alpha as faithfully and as honestly as he knew how, his position in the pack was threatened simply because he’d got involved with men from the Underworld. He shook his head when Sebastian asked if he wanted to take his own car and he didn’t say anything as Sebastian helped him into the back of one of the pack SUVs. Malacai took the driver’s seat, which Madison expected, but he was surprised when Sebastian climbed in after him, instead of sitting in the front.
“Try not to worry,” Sebastian said softly as Madison snuggled under his arm.
“I’m going to lose my pack,” Madison whimpered. “I’ve been here over forty years. I’ve never once gone against the Alpha or anyone else. I’ve worked fucking hard all my life and now this…we don’t even know what this is.” He could feel his tears rolling down his face.
“Damien’s not like that,” Malacai said, from the front of the vehicle. “He’s not angry with you. He just wants to make sure none of this is because of what happened when you were captured. That’s all.”
“How could it be?” Madison said crossly. “Yeah, that asshole drugged me, but he drugged Scott too, and no one’s avoiding the Alpha Mate or treating him like he’s going to freak out any moment and go on a rampage.”
Malacai shook his head but no one said anything else during the trip. Madison alternated between wanting to run as far away as he possibly could from everyone and everything, and getting angry because for whatever reason his mating had turned him into a super freak. He rubbed the spot where his tattoo marked his chest. His wolf loved being marked as mated and so did he. But what if it’d changed him somehow?
By the time the Pack House came into view, his nerves weren’t any better. The pack grounds, where children usually played and women sat and gossiped were empty and there were six enforcers on the porch; Damien and Scott standing in the middle of them.
“Great,” Madison muttered. “You told Damien I was a fucking killing machine too, I suppose.”
“I told him the truth,” Malacai looked over the back of his seat. “That my wolf wants to submit to you and believe me, you’re not the only one freaked out about this. I’ll text Elijah; he’s probably going to want to draw some blood so he and Miles can do their thing.”
“Let’s see if Damien has anything for lunch,” Sebastian suggested softly as he got out of the car.
“Oh we won’t be fed,” Madison followed his mate. “Wolves don’t eat with people they might have to kill.”
“Well, you’re immortal now and I’m quite capable of cooking.”
That didn’t make Madison feel any better. He approached the steps, feeling nervous about facing his Alpha for the first time in a long time. Damien looked surly as always, but Scott beamed and ran down the steps towards them.
